Born in Airdrie, Scotland. Brought up in Clydebank and studied Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee 1971/75. Awarded post graduate scholarship commended by artist Peter Blake (Pop Artist and designer of the record sleeve for the Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band).

Chick was also awarded the Bessie Scott Award in 2019 by Paisley Art Institute.


Chick has work in private collections in UK,, Germany, Canada, Norway, Belgium ands Australia.
With examples of work in public collections North Ayrshire Council and West Dumbarton Council (formerly Clydebank district Council). He has exhibited internationally in venues Inca Majorca Spain and Sandnes Norway as well as various venues in Scotland, and England throughout his career. Soho exhibitions include in The Scottish Maritime Museum, Back Door Gallery, Clydebank and the Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine. Regular display of work in The HAC Cafe at the Harbour Arts Centre.

Chick was the first artist in residence at the Steeple Newburgh North Fife when he took up his residency in the summer of 2009. He was Gallery Director of the Harbour Arts Centre Gallery, Irvine, on a voluntary basis from 1977/81 during which time he conceived and put into practice the idea of a summer school, an international exchange of work between artists in Scotland and Norway and the development of an artists’ studio complex in Irvine. During this time he booked, managed, administered, hung and exhibited the work of twelve different artists or art groups per year.

Chick was a full-time art teacher for thirty years. He took up his first reaching post in St. Andrew’s Academy and from there he was appointed principal teacher of art at Greenwood Academy, Irvine. He taught evening classes for adults at Ardrossan further education centre and continues to inspire and pass on his knowledge and expertise through delivering his painting demonstrations and talks to art clubs in Ardrossan, Castlepark, Eastwood, Kilmarnock, Milngavie and Troon.

Much of is recent work has been focused on the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine and one of his paintings from this series featured in the recent BBC drama production “Shetland” starring /Douglas Henshall. This painting “Low Light on Tug Boat” depicted the wreck of the tug boat “Garnock” moored at Irvine Harbour. Another of his paintings title “Boat Yard Worker at the Scottish Maritime Museum” won the James B Curr Memorial Aware at the 125th Paisley Art Institute Exhibition in 2013.

Chick is best known for his ability to cross genres with ease from his dynamic figure and portrait work to his Scottish Harbours and Mediterranean scenes, all of this radiate light and atmosphere.

He is a well established as an artist of note and since giving up his commitments other art education and community based art initiates to concentrate on his own work, he is making quite an impact on the art market at home and abroad with his distinctive oils, acrylics and pastels.
